Your Electrical Panel Still Living in the Past?
SPAN Is Turning One of the Most Overlooked Pieces of Equipment in the Home Into an Intelligent Energy-Management System
Take a quick inventory of the technology inside a modern home. Your thermostat knows when you’re away. Your doorbell can tell you who’s standing outside. Your refrigerator might send an alert to your phone.
Your lights can turn themselves on.
Your security cameras can recognize movement.
Your electric vehicle can schedule itself to charge overnight.
Your solar system can tell you how much electricity your roof produced today.
And then there’s the electrical panel.
Open the door and… there are breakers. Maybe some handwritten labels. Perhaps one says Kitchen. Another says A/C.
And if you’re lucky, someone actually labeled the one controlling the garage. For something connected to practically every electrical device in the house, the traditional electrical panel tells homeowners surprisingly little.
SPAN looked at that century-old piece of infrastructure and asked a rather obvious question: Why isn’t this smart too?
And that’s where things get interesting.
The Panel Has Always Been Important. We Just Rarely Think About It.
Most homeowners don’t spend much time thinking about their electrical panel.
That’s probably a good thing. Electricity enters the home, breakers distribute it safely, and everything works quietly in the background.
But our homes have changed. A lot. We’re adding electric vehicles. Battery storage.
Solar. Heat pumps. Electric water heaters. Induction cooking. Pool equipment. Smart-home systems. And increasingly sophisticated appliances.
The electrical panel sits in the middle of all of it.
Yet with a traditional panel, the homeowner generally has very little visibility into what’s actually happening.
You know how much electricity you used because the utility sends you a bill. But where did it go? Air conditioning? Pool pump? Water heater? EV? Kitchen?
Something you accidentally left running?
That’s the problem SPAN set out to solve.
Imagine Opening Your Electrical Panel on Your Phone
The SPAN Panel replaces a conventional electrical panel while adding digital monitoring and control at the circuit level.
Instead of walking into the garage and staring at rows of breakers, homeowners can use the SPAN Home App to see how their home is using energy.
Not simply: “My house is using electricity.”
But: “Where is it going?”
The system provides visibility into individual circuits and allows homeowners to remotely control circuits from their phone or tablet.
That sounds convenient.
But convenience isn’t actually the most interesting part.
Understanding your energy use is.
Because it’s difficult to manage something you can’t see.
Your Electric Bill Suddenly Has a Story Behind It
Imagine receiving an unusually high electric bill during a Las Vegas summer.
The traditional experience is familiar.
You look at the total.
You wince.
Then perhaps you blame the air conditioner.
And maybe you’re right.
But maybe you’re only partly right.
What if the pool equipment is consuming more electricity than expected?
What if an appliance has changed its operating behavior?
What if EV charging is occurring during an expensive utility period?
What if several large loads are overlapping every afternoon?
When energy consumption becomes visible at the circuit level, the conversation changes.
Instead of: “Why is my electric bill so high?”
you can begin asking: “What exactly is using the electricity?”
That’s a much more useful question.

But SPAN Isn’t Simply an Energy Monitor
This distinction matters. There are already devices capable of showing homeowners how much electricity their homes consume. SPAN goes further because it sits directly inside the electrical distribution system. That means the system can not only see loads.
It can help manage them. And that’s becoming increasingly important as homes electrify. Imagine a house with a 200-amp electrical service. Then the homeowner wants an EV charger. Later, a heat pump. Then perhaps an electric water heater. Maybe a hot tub.
Eventually someone looks at the electrical load calculation and says:
“We may need a larger electrical service.”
That can become expensive quickly. Utility involvement. New equipment. Larger conductors. Permitting. Trenching in some situations. Additional labor. And sometimes significant delays.
But what if the house could simply become smarter about when large loads operate?
Your House Doesn’t Need Everything at Full Power at the Same Time
This is where SPAN’s PowerUp energy-management system becomes particularly interesting. PowerUp is built into SPAN Panels and can manage large electrical loads to help keep household demand below the capacity of the electrical service.
Imagine the air conditioner is running. The electric range is being used. The dryer is operating. And then the EV begins charging. Instead of allowing all of those loads to push the home’s electrical demand toward its limit, an intelligent energy-management system can adjust certain flexible loads. Perhaps EV charging temporarily slows.
The homeowner may never even notice. Later, dinner is finished. The dryer shuts off. More electrical capacity becomes available. The EV can use it. The important idea is simple:/ We may not always need a bigger electrical system. Sometimes we need a smarter way to use the one we already have. That’s a very different approach to home electrification.
Utilities Are Starting to Pay Attention
And this isn’t merely an interesting concept for technology enthusiasts.
Utilities are beginning to explore it too. In February 2026, Pacific Gas and Electric announced a collaboration with SPAN involving SPAN Edge, an at-the-meter energy-management device.
The idea is to help homes add technologies such as EV charging, heat pumps and electric appliances without automatically requiring expensive panel or electrical-service upgrades. PG&E estimates that more than 600,000 homes in its service territory could require some form of electrical-service upgrade over the next decade as electrification increases.
That’s an enormous infrastructure challenge. But if intelligent load management can allow some homes to use their existing electrical capacity more efficiently, the solution may not always require bigger wires and larger equipment.
Sometimes software can become part of the electrical solution.
That’s an important development.
Then the Power Goes Out
This is where SPAN becomes particularly interesting for homes with battery backup. Suppose your home has a battery. The grid goes down. The battery takes over. With a traditional backup configuration, homeowners often have to decide during installation which circuits will be backed up.
Refrigerator? Yes.
Lights? Yes.
Internet? Probably.
Air conditioning? Maybe.
Pool equipment? Probably not.
EV charger? Almost certainly not if battery capacity is limited.
The problem is that priorities can change. Maybe tonight you don’t care about the home office. But you desperately want the bedroom air conditioner. Tomorrow might be different. SPAN allows homeowners with compatible battery systems to change which circuits receive power during an outage.
That turns backup power from something relatively rigid into something much more flexible.
Think About What That Could Mean During a Nevada Outage
It’s August. It’s 108 degrees outside. The grid goes down. Your battery shows several hours of remaining energy. Now you have a decision to make.
Do you really need every light in the house?
Does the pool need to run?
Does the EV need to charge?
Does the clothes dryer need electricity?
Probably not.
Cooling? Refrigeration? Internet? Perhaps those matter considerably more. A smart electrical panel gives the homeowner another tool: Prioritization.
SPAN says its system can extend battery backup duration by as much as 40% by allowing homeowners to intelligently manage which loads remain powered during an outage. That doesn’t mean the battery magically gained 40% more energy.
The intelligence is in how the stored energy is used. And that’s an important distinction. Sometimes getting more from a battery isn’t about buying a bigger battery. It’s about wasting less of the battery you already have.
Then There’s the Electric Vehicle
EV charging presents another interesting challenge.
SPAN Drive is the company’s Level 2 EV charging system and can deliver up to 48 amps, or approximately 11.5 kW. But the more interesting capability is what happens when the charger communicates with the home’s energy-management system.
Rather than operating as an isolated electrical load, SPAN Drive can dynamically adjust charging based on the electrical demand elsewhere in the home.
If household demand approaches the service limit, charging can temporarily decrease.
When capacity becomes available again, charging can increase. SPAN also allows scheduled charging so homeowners can take advantage of lower-cost utility periods where applicable. The EV charger becomes part of the house rather than simply something connected to it.
And SPAN Keeps Changing After It’s Installed
This may be one of the most unusual aspects of putting software inside electrical infrastructure.
A traditional electrical panel installed twenty years ago works essentially the same way today as it did on the day it was installed.
A smart panel can evolve.
SPAN’s July 2026 software release, for example, included improvements to battery runtime estimates, EV charging behavior, device security, connectivity with Enphase backup systems and Powerwall 3 integration.
SPAN has also introduced local API capabilities allowing advanced users and developers to integrate the panel with home-automation platforms and other local systems.
Think about that for a moment. We’re now talking about software updates for the electrical panel.
That sentence alone demonstrates how much residential electrical infrastructure is changing.
Of Course, Smarter Doesn’t Automatically Mean Better for Everyone
There’s an important point worth making.
Not every homeowner needs a smart electrical panel.
If someone has a relatively simple home, isn’t adding significant electrical loads, has no plans for solar or batteries and doesn’t particularly care about circuit-level energy monitoring, a conventional electrical panel may serve them perfectly well.
Smart technology should solve a problem.
It shouldn’t become the problem.
There’s also cost to consider.
A smart panel costs considerably more than conventional electrical distribution equipment, and installation requirements vary depending on the home.
That’s why the question shouldn’t be: “Is SPAN better than a regular electrical panel?”
The better question is: “What do I need my electrical panel to do?”
For some homes, distribute electricity safely.
For others? The answer is becoming considerably more sophisticated.
Our Take
At HDE, SPAN represents something much larger than a fancy breaker panel.
It represents a change in how we’re beginning to think about electricity inside the home.
For decades, homeowners had almost no interaction with their electrical infrastructure. Electricity came in. The panel distributed it. The utility measured it. The bill arrived. That relationship is changing.
Solar allows homeowners to produce electricity. Batteries allow them to store it. Energy monitoring allows them to understand it. Smart controls allow them to manage it. EVs turn electricity into transportation.
And intelligent electrical panels can begin coordinating those technologies. That means the electrical panel is no longer simply sitting between the utility and the house. Increasingly, it’s sitting between: The utility. Solar. Battery storage. EV charging. HVAC. Household loads. And the homeowner.
That’s a much more important job.
Maybe the Smart Home Was Missing Something
We’ve spent years making individual devices smarter.
Smart thermostat.
Smart doorbell.
Smart lights.
Smart refrigerator.
Smart security system.
But perhaps we overlooked the device connecting almost all of them.
The electrical panel.
SPAN’s bet is that the next generation of smart homes won’t simply have intelligent appliances.
They’ll have intelligent electrical infrastructure underneath them.
And that idea may become especially important as our homes consume, generate and store more electricity than ever before.
Because the smartest home may not be the one with the most technology.
It may be the one that understands exactly where its energy is going—and knows what to do with it.
