And that’s worth figuring out before you start putting panels on the roof.
Before You Make More Energy, Find Out Where Yours Is Going
Imagine filling a bucket with water without first checking whether it has holes.
You could keep adding more water—or you could fix the leaks.
Your home isn’t much different.
An inefficient air-conditioning system, aging equipment, poor temperature control, unnecessary loads, outdated lighting, pool equipment, or devices quietly consuming electricity can all contribute to higher energy use.
Adding solar may help offset some of that consumption.
But it doesn’t necessarily solve the reason you’re consuming so much electricity in the first place.
Sometimes the smarter first investment is simply using less.

“How much solar do I need?”
to:
“How much energy does my home actually need?”
That’s a much better question.

Now the energy problem you’re trying to solve is smaller.
That could influence how a future solar system is designed.
It could affect battery-backup decisions. It could change which loads you consider critical during an outage.
And sometimes, the homeowner discovers that the best energy strategy isn’t one giant upgrade.
It’s several smaller, intelligent improvements working together.
Efficiency first. Generation second.
Storage where it makes sense.
Not because that’s the right order for every home—but because it’s worth asking whether it’s the right order for yours.
Solar Can Still Be Part of the Destination
None of this is an argument against solar.
Quite the opposite.
Solar becomes much more interesting when it’s part of a thoughtful energy strategy.
A home might eventually combine efficient heating and cooling, smart lighting, energy monitoring, intelligent electrical controls, EV charging, solar generation, and battery storage.
But those technologies shouldn’t simply be collected.
They should solve problems.
And the right solution depends on the home, the people living in it, their energy habits, their budget, and what they’re ultimately trying to accomplish.
Maybe that’s lowering energy costs.
Maybe it’s improving comfort.
Maybe it’s preparing for an EV.
Maybe it’s keeping important circuits operating during an outage.
Maybe it’s gradually becoming less dependent on the grid.
Different goals can require very different solutions.
